Building a Legacy of Education in Mauritius ...
Schools and Colleges in Mauritius are growing and changing. Student populations are increasing. Historical facilities require modernization, new technology needs to be incorporated, and new campuses must be constructed. The J&A Team understand the complexities and specific requirements of building learning institutions. Our extensive experience in planning, managing and building public and private institutions of higher learning has greatly benefited the education sector in the island.

Where Do You Want Your Kids to Go to School Today?
We all care for our kids and want the best for them, including the best schools. When J&A Architects approaches the planning, managing and building of a new school (or the renovation of an existing one), we approach the project as if we were building for our own kids — because in most cases, we are. We live in the communities where we work, and have a vested interest in our neighborhoods, our communities and our schools.

Our Perspective
Sharing your passion and enthusiasm for creating the best schools for our communities is the key to a successful project. Our extensive experience in planning, managing and building public and private educational facilities has benefited the overall population.

Fine Arts Building *

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute has been very successful in the past years and badly needed space for the development of the Arts department. A very land prominent on top of a hill overlooking the highway at Reduit was made available. A master plan was developed and only the Sculpture and Painting Studio has been implemented. The building had to reflect Indian culture. Circular arches characteristic of indian architecture give additionally a rhythm and an institutional character to the building.

Le Bocage - New Library & Gymnasium

This private school initially catered for the education of the children of the English speaking expatriates. Over the years due to the inadequacy of the local education system, mauritians were admitted. Very quickly there was tremendous pressure for expansion due to the growing demand for admission. The school located on a very slopy ground at Moka near the Moka range mountains offers little adequate land for expansion.

Primary/ pre-primary school

Private French medium schools have been very successful for the French community in particular and for Franco-Mauritian and Mauritian at large. To cater for the needs of a growing community at Tamarin and to resolve the problem of long transport distance to Curepipe, it was decided to start a French school at Tamarin. A restricted design competition was launched on a very picturesque site bordering the Tamarin River.

Also a central internal courtyard has been provided for. All these facilities have also been provided with handicap access facilities such as ramps.

One or two primary schools launched through a design and build competition. Th e concept is the inevitable courtyard with however buildings sealed to march the occupants. Th e main multi-purpose hall has been strategically located at the entrance of the complex so as to regulate the movement of the students and visitor’s directly to the hall, without having them to move within the core of the complex. Th e Architectural treatment tends to further emphasize its visual appeal by juxtaposing a combination of varied materials such as Basalt Stone walls intersecting with rendered blockwalls with grooves,  owever balancing it with the overall architectural treatment of the complex as a whole.

Extension Works at Droopnath Ramphul Polytechnique *

The manager and his team must be able to easily control and circulate from the Administration/ Library Block at the entrance to all the teaching and planning areas. Th erefore a straightforward circulation system with all blocks gathered around a triangular central courtyard has been designed. The scheme is intentionally simple with construction cost singled out as greatest potential element of concern. Th school has been separated into diff erent blocks having common identities.

The entrance is graced with an administration cum library building giving it a sense of identity and focus point. Two classroom blocks namely the IT Block and the Business Administration Block. The triangle courtyard is then completed with the gymnasium and student centre. The toilet blocks are all located so as to enable the wind from the South and South East to blow away the bad smells from the working areas.
